For all you other iPhone 3G users out there that are using iOS 4, I found a performance tip that actually works!
"To remedy some of the sluggish performance (or at least one cause of it) go to Settings->General->Home Button->Spotlight Search-> and de-select every option. This will stop background indexing on the phone."
I don't know about you but I never use the Spotlight search on my phone (left of the home screen), and after I did this, I noticed an immediate performance increase.
