The Max-iPad is pretty cool but not quite all the things I wanted..

Pricing is decent though. But I am mostly bummed that it's an App Store thing again..

This will be device worth jailbreaking though.. As a demo platform it would be awesome to pull that out and have Apache/MySQL running locally to demo something on the spot.

Under powered, Locked in software, No Flash support, 3G connectivity based on carrier specific plans (if you pay the extra for 3G). This pretty much sounds like the ultimate web surfin' device. Puke.

^^ yeah if I end up getting this thing, I would get a Wifi-only version and only after I knew for sure that it was jailbreakable.. otherwise it just seems like too much of a lock-in, as you put it.

^^ Reminds me of another (exceptionally) funny Mad TV Apple spoof from a few years back: iRack.

After watching the video on apple.com I could see how this device could be really fun and useful, but I'd only consider it if it ran around $300 and had +100gb of memory. And some USB ports. Basically if it could compete with my netbook, which seems to be the posiioning for it.

the 3G units come unlocked. no flash: i noticed that too [demo were done with os 3.2 for iPAD only. we'll just have to wait till summer for OS 4]. a good reson for designs&developers to learn to develop FOR this class of device. beside it's just flash...learn some new methods.

'As a demo platform..' sebs comment--that's exaclty what i would like to see in this platform. i'm very interested in what apps will be created for development. i shutter to think that a xampp-type app would be the only way...

"File Sharing. A shared file directory is provided that will mount on your Mac or PC. This is presumably how files such as iWork documents will be transferred to and from the iPad. iPad applications will be able to access this shared directory."

Yeah this thing is just a bigger iPhone really.. It's not a self-contained computer, and that sucks.

Can I plug an iPod or iPhone into it and sync? I'm guessing not. Which means if I am going anywhere on a trip with this thing, I still need to bring my laptop. Unless all I need to do is finger paint some numbers into a spreadsheet..

we'll just have to wait and see what will be possible when it's released...and how it may progress. if enough [people like us as geeky web people] really want to work from this platform (during travelling....a weekend away) apps for it will come along.

i have actually thinking the is a perfect device for my other half--as a general computer user who email, plays come online games...some general text editing--this device could replace his laptop completely today.

About the netbook competition thing - Jobs certainly tried to make it sound that way, but there's no way it comes close to the functionality of a netbook. The iPad uses Apple's new A4 processor, which is really cool, but light weight, and designed to power smartphone like devices. Also, so far there's no talk of multitasking, or multiple process management. And as far as connectivity goes, aside from the proprietary ways to load software, music, and ebooks, it limits itself to a network mountable public folder and is unable to mount storage of its own. It is literally just a big iPod Touch with 3G (if you pay for it).

My guess is that more functionality will not be added to this, because this device was created to be the iPod of ebooks.

I would pay $250 for this thing, being a couch-surfing device. Final offer.

^^Thank you for clarifying that for me.

@Krock, Stephen Fry is also an obssessive compulsive mainc depressive who will buy three of anything sold by apple when he is on a shopping binge (his words, not mine)

I bet you didn't even read that. Because you obviously missed the part where he addresses that.

The thing I find odd about Stephen Fry here is that he's been quite vocal about his support for open standards, and in fact, the 'free' aspect of FOSS. Apple, more than any other company, has done more to ensure that their systems remain closed, while simultaneously integrating FOSS in ways that limits how it can be developed on their platforms.

@krock, no, I didn't, that is true. All I saw was Stephen Fry's twitter feed about the iPad. But I've seen him talk about the fact that he will pretty much buy three of anything apple makes, and he can't really explain why.
